Transforming a Design Studio Feature Wall with Novacolor Italia
Custom training days often create space for real, hands-on learning. During a recent one-on-one training session with decorative artist Carolyn Finch, our own Beth Schafer was working through the application of several Novacolor Italia materials when the training intersected with an active design project. The timing allowed product education to unfold within a real-world setting, resulting in completed feature walls for Stella & Sloan, a design studio by Amy Leigh.
The project centered on a red-brick feature wall in the studio. Rather than covering the existing surface entirely, the intention was to enhance its structure while introducing depth, texture, and material cohesion aligned with the overall studio aesthetic.
Surface Preparation
Working over brick requires careful preparation to ensure longevity and performance. The wall was first primed with DecoFix, a penetrating sealant designed to stabilize porous substrates. This was followed by Novaprimer, a quartz tooth coat that provides the necessary grip for layered mineral finishes.
These steps created a stable foundation capable of supporting both texture and material build without compromising adhesion.
Building Texture and Definition
With the surface prepared, Archi+ Fondo was applied as a base layer to unify the wall. A second layer with Archi+ Big was then used to fill and build up the grout lines, establishing structure while softening inconsistencies in the original brick.
From there, mixed layers of Archi+ Pietra & Intonaco and Archi+ Tadelakt were applied, allowing the surface to evolve gradually. This layering process introduced subtle variation and movement while maintaining visual cohesion across the wall.
Finishing with Metallo Fuso Bronzo
The wall was completed with Metallo Fuso Bronzo, adding warmth and metallic depth. The finish responds gently to light, bringing dimension to the surface without overpowering the space.
The result complements the design studio environment while showcasing how Novacolor Italia materials can be layered to create surfaces that feel both grounded and refined.
A Project Grounded in Real Application
This feature wall reflects the value of learning materials in real conditions. Training within an active project allowed techniques, textures, and finishes to be explored in a way that directly translates to professional work. The completed wall now anchors the Stella & Sloan studio and serves as a practical example of thoughtful material application.
